DESCALING SERVICES

Scale on your product or part is caused by natural and mechanical processes such as heat treating, welding, and oxidization.  Arrow Cryogenics uses a variety of methods to polish, finish or descale your parts, such as:  abrasive blasting, shot blasting, chemical descaling, and vibratory finishing.

Methods used for Descaling

Abrasive Blasting and Shot Blasting Descaling

We feature a wide variety of abrasive blasting and shot blasting machines to meet your descaling and finishing needs.  Each of our machines is used with a single type and size of media to avoid cross-contamination. Several of our machines are committed strictly to medical components and other machines are able to run a wide variety of parts.

Vibratory Descaling

Our vibratory descaling process is utilized extensively to remove heat treat scale from steel and stainless steel parts. Our vibratory finishing department has a wide variety of media available.  By using different sizes and compositions of media, we are able to achieve a wide range of finishes.

After parts or components have gone through one of our vibratory descaling processes, they may need to be protected from oxidization. Our customers may specify whether petroleum-based or non petroleum-based inhibitors may be used.

Chemical Descaling

Chemical descaling is most often used on stainless steel because of its resistance to chemicals.

Chemicals are able to remove the scale without attacking the stainless steel. After descaling, stainless steel parts may need to be passivated or electropolished. Chemical passivation and electropolishing improves the corrosion resistance of stainless steel.

Descaling is ideal for use for the following applications:

  • Electropolishing
  • Painting
  • Plating

Descaling can be also used before or after a welding process, depending on your needs.  Prior to welding, it is critical that weld joints and parts are free of mill scale and other contaminants.  These foreign substances can potentially degrade the part’s metal properties and lower corrosion resistance.

You may also need to remove scale for cosmetic reasons or to ensure cleanliness for medical and electronic applications with stringent specifications. To meet our customers’ exacting requirements, Arrow Cryogenics also offers an on-site class 10,000 (ISO Class 7) clean room for the cleaning and packaging of parts.
