Abrasive Flow Machining Process

AFM utilizes two opposed cylinders that force abrasive media through workpiece and tooling passages. The abrasion operates only within the extrusion area where the flow is restricted. The machining action of AFM is comparable to grinding or lapping, where abrasive media gently and uniformly smooths material edges and surfaces. Both soft and hard metals benefit from abrasive flow machining services. The rate of material removal depends on the following factors:

Media Sizes & Viscosity

Depending on the application, media of differing viscosities can increase flow rate, allowing for material edges to be abraded more than the passage walls. The flow pattern can be adjusted based on the machine settings, media formulation, and workpiece and tooling configurations. Higher viscosity media is used for uniformly abrading the walls of large passages. Lower viscosity media is generally appropriate for radiusing edges and for processing small areas.
